The Coral Eclipse was a fascinating race and resulted in a very tight finish between 3 of the runners! Vadeni became the first French trained horse to win the race in over 60 years, but connections clearly thought he would go close after supplementing him for the race for £50,000. There were some very noticeable performances in behind the winner though! Mishriff being the eyecatcher for the Juddmonte International at York this season, I think the Eclipse was a very hot renewal this year.
I tipped Mishriff for my members at 17/2 and he ran a super race to finish a very close 2nd. However, he was extremely unlucky in running and you’d imagine he would have won with a clear run up the home straight. David Egan got caught in behind a wall of horses when they started to quicken and had nowhere to go and was forced to wait and switch in behind horses costing him valuable lengths and that was the difference between winning and losing. I would imagine Mishriff will go to York now for the Juddmonte International which he is currently priced up at around 4/1. He bolted up in the race last year and is coming in with a better run under his belt. A lot depends on whether Baeed and Desert Crown turn up for the race. If neither do, I think Mishriff is a banker!
Native Trail who finished 3rd in the Eclipse, ran a very good race for a 3-year-old but had no excuses not to go and win and think he probably got slightly out-stayed up the hill, but only by two very talented horses in Vadeni and Mishriff. Native Trail will win his share of races at 1m2f, but I think he is probably more effective over a mile.
Bay Bridge I don’t think is quite up to Group 1 level. I thought he was going into Royal Ascot, but he got beat there which I was surprised about. I still thought he was a Group 1 winner in the waiting, but I think I have got him slightly wrong and feel like he is a little short of being a proper Group 1 horse. Alenquer was also disappointing, but I think he needs softer ground to be seen at his best, so I wouldn’t give up on him yet as he is only a 4-year-old.
When owners and trainers supplement horses for races late on and close to the race date itself. It is usually a very good sign that their horse will go close in the race and it is definitely worth having a bet on them. In this case, Vadeni proved that the £50,000 supplement fee was 100% worth every penny. Even when you look back at the Arkle at the 2022 Cheltenham festival, Gabynako was supplemented for the race and finished a very good 2nd at 25/1. One of the recent disappointments was Tuesday in the Irish Derby, where she finished 4th after being supplemented. However, the race didn’t go to plan, so I’d ignore this one. But it is definitely worth keeping an eye out for horses that have been supplemented for races when studying the form!
